Giant Chard and Other Portion Problems

Chard as tall as a refrigerator is wide. I didn't think it would happen to me. Can it happen to you? It probably did if you are in Northern California
It's always tempting to use the entirety of an ingredient when you pull it out of the refrigerator. It's freshest that first time and often abundance is inspiring. Recipe planning is one method often suggested for dealing with this compulsion, but another way for the less planning oriented is to portion your fresh ingredients as you store them in the refrigerator with no specific recipe in mind.

But that requires knowing what the portion sizes are. Right? Yes and no. You don't need to know what a Food Pyramid portion is for different foods. But you do need to approximately how much you would use in a common recipe with that ingredient.

At the very least, just split what you have in half and you are better off. Now if you'll excuse me, I need to separate this particular chard into one stalk portions.
